Metabolic health refers to how well your body processes and uses energy from food. A person with good metabolic health can maintain stable blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels while efficiently converting food into energy.
On the other hand, poor metabolic health—often unnoticed—can lead to issues like blood sugar spikes, energy crashes, weight gain, and increased risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
Good metabolic health helps you feel energised, think clearly, and maintain a healthy weight. You can improve it through diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management.
A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is a device that tracks your blood sugar levels in real time. It works through a tiny sensor placed just under the skin, measuring glucose levels in the fluid between your cells every few minutes. The data is then sent wirelessly to a mobile app, allowing you to see how your blood sugar responds to food, exercise, sleep, and stress throughout the day.
Vively uses the Freestyle Libre CGM sensor, a 14-day blood sugar test that helps you understand how your metabolism is working. While CGMs are commonly used by people with diabetes, they can also be a powerful tool for anyone looking to optimise their metabolic health—even if you don’t have diabetes.
Many people unknowingly experience blood sugar spikes and crashes that can lead to fatigue, cravings, weight gain, and, over time, insulin resistance. By using a CGM for several months, you can gain instant, personalised feedback on how your body responds to different foods, workouts, and habits—helping you make smarter choices to keep your metabolism healthy.
For example, both brown rice and quinoa are whole grains, but your body may process one better than the other, leading to fewer blood sugar spikes. Or you might discover that eating a certain food before or after exercise changes how your body metabolises it. This kind of insight empowers you to make better choices for long-term health, reducing the risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and weight gain.
A CGM isn’t just about tracking numbers—it’s about understanding what works for your body so you can take control of your health.

New research has revealed that an “alarmingly low” number of American adults have optimal metabolic health, placing the majority at increased risk of serious illnesses.
In a study published in the journal Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill analysed data from 8,721 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2009 and 2016. They discovered that only 1 in 8 American adults currently meet the criteria for optimal metabolic health.
Optimal metabolic health was defined as maintaining healthy levels of blood sugar, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference—without medication. These factors are crucial indicators of risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
The study found that adults classified as obese had the lowest rates of optimal metabolic health, with only 0.5 percent meeting the criteria. Surprisingly, fewer than half of underweight adults and less than one-third of those with a normal body weight also achieved optimal metabolic health.
